Together, Kendrick Lamar and B.J. The Chicago Kid can always be trusted to create beautiful and memorable songs. Their latest, His Pain, is close to their 2009 song Faith, but takes on a new intensity each time Kendrick’s voice cracks with emotion. Kendrick’s sing-song hook is like a lullaby, intended to calm himself more than the listener.

Straying away from simply singing the hook on what is essentially a rap song, B.J. The Chicago Kid doesn’t appear on the track until Kendrick’s two verses have finished. His vocals creep in over the rapper’s voice and he sings an additional verse before taking on the lullaby hook we heard from Kendrick in a soothing tone I haven’t heard since D’Angelo.
