1. What’s the meaning behind your name?
My mother named me “Joyce” and she said she likes the way it sounds haha. She can’t recall where she found the name. Womp Womp.

2. What other names have you had?
My dad has been calling me “Toyota” ever since I was a little girl. Not sure why… but he only purchases Toyota cars and Lexus cars so maybe it has something to do with that… I’m not quite sure. Some people also call me by my middle name “Machiko,” which is a Japanese name given to me by my mom. Some call me “Joy,” “Joycee” and “Joyce the Voice.”

3. Which song of yours would you first want people to hear?
Oh man, ‘Ain’t No Need’. I love the production of the song, which was created by Mndsgn and DJ Harrison. In addition to that, I love the simplicity of the lyrics, the melodies, harmonies and the way I stacked my vocals. My favourite part of the song is the beginning of the second verse. I love the bounce in the lyrics, “tried love once, didn’t really work out. But I learned it takes timmmme.” SiR came up with that part and it always makes me want to dance.

4. Who was your hip hop idol growing up?
I didn’t really idolise any hip hop artists growing up. However, I really admired Tupac. I learned hip hop choreography to his songs, ‘So Many Tears’ and ‘Letter to My Unborn Child’ and couldn’t stop researching his music and really reading and listening to his lyrics.

5. Which musician would you most like to work with?
Oh man, there are so many! Recently I was having a conversation with someone who used to work at So So Def and I told him that one of my favourite writers is Johnta Austin. He is someone I really want to work with.

6. If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing instead?
I would be performing choreography, training dogs and translating languages!

7. What’s success to you?
Success to me is not being defeated by your circumstances. It’s so easy to make excuses and be swayed by our environment but it takes a lot of self-discipline and courage to never give up and keep pressing on.

8. Which country produces the best food and women/men?
This is an interesting question haha. I don’t think there is one country that produces the best food and women/men. I will say that lately I’ve been into Nigerian okra stew. As far as women/men, I love black women/men.

9. What’s your vice?
Spicy foods. I have a sensitive stomach. Do big dogs count too? Haha I have a sick obsession with pit bulls, rottweilers and mastiffs. I will pull over and ask to pet someone’s big dog.

10.What’s your favourite animal? I love big dogs and would love to play with friendly monkeys.
