“A person who does not stay long in the same place; a wanderer”

New York City was the setting for the NMD launch last week. The latest trainer to be released by adidas originals, the NMD is a new silhouette designed for a nomadic lifestyle with no boundaries.

Taking place on December 9th in Lexington Armory, Manhattan, the event showcased the shoe’s practicality as it was exhibited alongside various everyday objects, spray painted in the same primary colours as the show itself, including dice and a skateboard.

With several models encased in a glass case, guests were able to get a close look at the shoe. Behind the glass cases was a giant screen depicting scenes of Chinatown and other iconically New York imagery. Behind the screen was a runway with dozens of models wearing the trainer, with only their feet showing.

The event was attended by global press, many of whom had flown into NYC for the launch, very appropriate considering the trainer’s moniker. I was one of the lucky few invited by adidas to explore the city for the launch of the NMD. With a brand new pair of NMDs on my feet, I was ready to explore, the lightweight bases and flexible fabric making this the perfect trainer for travelers.

In addition to the launch party, she was part of an international group chosen to explore some of the most inaccessible locations the Big Apple has to offer. First they headed underground into an LIRR tunnel closed for the special occasion. After climbing up freight trains and walking through the dark tunnel, the group headed up to the 50th floor of a skyscraper on Park Avenue to witness one of the most awe-inspiring views of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler building.

The NMD, a shoe for explorers.
